As messed up as it is, there are people out there that love to make things difficult for others. They will attach some sort of virus or malware to the Wii unlocking files so that when you download and install them yourself, your computer or Wii will become infected.

I’ve ruined one Wii by doing this and got my computer infected another time just because I used files from a source I wasn’t familiar with. So do yourself a favor, download softmod wii files from the official site.

First off, you will be able to play DVDs on your Wii. Honestly, I don’t know why Nintendo didn’t include this as an already installed feature to the Wii when they released it. Every other gaming console allows DVD playback and the PS3 even has a Blu-Ray player. It seems obvious to me that they would include DVD playback, but they didn’t. That is one of my favorites about doing a softmod to the Wii, I can now watch movies with it.

Another thing you will be able to do with an unlocked Wii is make backup copies of all your games. This will save you a ton of money on buying new games since you can just copy them right on the Wii itself. Think of how easily games get scratched, lost, or stolen. You don’t have to worry about this anymore since you will always have a backup copy.

Playing emulators is another feature you will enjoy with an unlocked Wii. Emulators allow you to play old school games from other consoles. Some of the systems you can play games from on the Wii are Original Nintendo, SNES, N64, and Sega Genesis. I think that a lot of the old school games are better than the ones that come out today and since I don’t have my old consoles anymore, I haven’t been able to play these games. With Homebrew installed though, I am able to enjoy all of these games again.

Finally, you will have access to tons of other Homebrew applications and games. You will also be able to browse the internet on your Wii. 1. You can get a copy of Zelda: Twilight Princess and do the Twilight Hack. A lot of people believe that this is the only way to softmod your Wii, but that isn’t the case. There is a new software out that allows you to unlock your Wii without any need for Zelda at all. I personally don’t recommend the Twilight Hack because you need to buy or rent a copy of the game if you don’t already have it, and also, the Twilight Hack only works on certain firmware versions of the Wii. However, if you already own a copy of the Twilight Princess and you have the correct firmware version, then by all means use the Twilight Hack.

For reference, the Twilight Hack can only be done on firmware versions 3.3 or earlier. If you have already upgraded past 3.3, you would need to do a downgrade and that is another topic.
